Citadel of Qaytbay

The Qaitbay Citadel is one of the grand fortresses lining the Mediterranean coastline of Alexandria, Egypt. This 15th-century fortified mosque stands in the very place where, in ancient times, the fabled Pharos Lighthouse, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, used to stand. This great architecture was used for protection from sea attacks and expressed the strategic interest in maritime trade on the part of Alexandria. Nowadays, it calls upon tourists to walk through the robust walls, ancient relics, and marvelous views of the sea as it unrolls Egypt's multi-cultured legacy and medieval military strength.

Historical Background and Cultural Implications

Historical Background

Built by Emperor Qaitbay: The building known as the Qaitbay Citadel was one of the projects that Emperor Qaitbay, who reigned over Egypt in the medieval period, had taken the initiative to build. It was built over the period between 1477 and 1480 AD over the grazing area of the oldest Pharos Lighthouse. The Lighthouse of Pharos was the navigational heartbeat behind Alexander the Great's establishment of Alexandria as a city.

Replacing the Pharos Lighthouse: With the citadel having been constructed, the remains and resources of the Pharos Lighthouse were now to be used to fortify Alexandria from naval threats into the Mediterranean Sea. Its position, high above the Eastern Harbor, secures control over naval activities thereby protecting the key trade ways of the city promising invaluable security.

Cultural Implications

Symbol of Defense: The Qaitbay Citadel mainly defended Alexandria and its harbor, during the Mamluk rule, from outside invasions. Hardly any sign remains in the world of such arsenite, fortress-like walled and towered military architecture and engineering of that epoch of the Islamic world, like posts holding cannons inside bastions.

Cultural and Architectural Heritage: The citadel is an architectonic symbiosis of Mameluke, Ottoman, and Mediterranean stylistically. Its planning united in itself the practical military interests and aesthetic values: the complex stone finishing, arch entrances, and tactical intentions for the arrangement of the defensive elements within the composition.

Strategic Importance

Protection from Foreign Invasions

Historical Background: As a forerunner into the Mediterranean Sea since time immemorial, Alexandria has been vulnerable to foreign threats from invaders. The Citadel of Qaitbay also stood for Egypt's state posture in terms of vigilance, which further supported the consolidation of power by the state at the regional political background.

Military Strategies and Defense: At the time of the defense for the naval attack of Alexandria, there were some well-armed soldiers within the citadel together with artillery. The tactical design and the placing allowed room for proper vigilance and also the arrangement for fast actions that ensured the city could defend itself from the hands of the enemies.

Symbol of Power and Dominance

Cultural and Political Significance: the Citadel of Qaitbay was also a symbolic statement of power and leadership for the reigning Sultans of Egypt, most especially Sultan Qaitbay. And, its magnificence in structure and architectural masterpiece proves that, indeed, Alexander was the foremost city in the Mediterranean Basin from a cultural and economic standpoint; hence, the power that Egypt held over world trade and affairs was magnified.

Maritime Heritage: In truth, the purpose of the fortress goes beyond military defense. The fortress has become an icon of Egyptian naval supremacy and naval traditions thought to have brought about—or connected to vibrant trade ties, cultural exchange, and intellectual contacts that invigorated and pushed forward—the process of the making of Alexandria's identity.

Conservation and Restoration Efforts

The Qaitbay Citadels have been put through many processes of restoration and conservation to guarantee that they stand stable and are still considered a monuments. Below, is the work carried out in restoration in detail:

Conservation Obstacles and Actions

Structure Maintenance: the Citadel of Qaitbay experienced problems such as wear and weather erosion, and structural decay. Therefore, engineering and archaeological experts collaborated to analyze the mentioned problems to come up with remedies, with the main concern tending to walling reinforcing, masonry renovation, and shoring architectural members that were exposed to external elements.

Historical Documentation: Elaborate recording of the architectural elements, historical artifacts, and the structural condition of the fortresses have helped in great measures in the restoration work. The complicated surveys, archival research, and the use of digital mapping techniques have supported the understanding of its evolution and the development of strategies for its preservation.

Future Plans and Challenges

Sustainable Conservation: Future activities for the conservation of the Qaitbay's Citadel will contribute to monitoring, maintaining, and re-using mechanisms of the site for its continuous viability. The challenge will be addressed with local communities, educational institutions, and partners at an international level in the assurance of this iconic cultural site for future generations.

Heritage of Conservation: It was full of successful restoration and conservation continued to present not only the architectural legacy of the building. At the same time, it does the place itself in Alexandria and global heritage. The inspirations stemming from this Citadel continue to thrive, spreading appreciation of the many historical and maritime heritages of Egypt which should be carefully balanced within the attributes according to the level of tourism and the community needs.

I was referred by a friend to Eid Moawed. One of the guides who helped me plan by bespoke private itinerary for 10 days in Egypt. And no I did not regret it! During my journey with Eid, I was told by other guides that I am lucky to have him as my guide and wallahi it’s true.

Throughout my trip in Egypt, I met different guides, airport assistance and drivers at different cities and they are all lovely! As a solo female traveller, I was well taken care of!

The tour was very organised and they meet what was planned. Communication was also very clear, from the planning to during the tour. We would like to highlight that we enjoy the tour guide they assigned to us in Cairo, and the driver in Luxor.

Happy Egypt organised for our family (parents and children aged 16-21) a made-to-measure tour of Egypt.
We started after a day break on the red sea and were leaving from Cairo. Happy Egypt organised everything for us: schedule, transfers, hotels, visits, entries, … as well as a super friendly very knowledge and professional guide whose role in making our holiday amazing was undeniable.
The tour took into account our desire to have family time, but also see the sites when they would be quieter, to have explanations during the visits yet free time to also look at our own pace, and overall, all were met.
Boat was very small (as per our wishes) with a crew that could not have done more for us. Water always available in taxi, boat, etc. No hassle from anyone, just pure pleasure.

If we were to return, there is nothing we would change and we will recommend this company to any of our friends who plan such a holiday: big thank you from all of us.

Thank you Ahmed, thank you Mostafa.

We booked a tour in Dahabiya from Aswan to Luxor. It was gorgeous. The boat was only for us. The crew, Mahmud the manager among them, was very obliging, the food was fantastic and the guide Mahmoud was an excellent archaeologist, very didactic and patient. We had a wonderful time with him, enjoying every moment. He selected the better places to see everything, he answered any question we did and always in good mood. I recommend this experience. Probably we will repeat with another part of the family.

This was such a fun experience for my whole family. We were picked up early morning at 4:30 by the balloon company arranged by Ahmed our agency owner. What followed after that was a series of pickups and boat transfers on the Nile to go to the West Bank. The excitement was palpitating and we were in awe to see a collection of all hot air balloons getting ready to take off. It was an unforgettable experience to see the whole city and right at sunrise, the view was breathtaking. Am so glad we did this.

We were a group of eight, three couples and two friends. I started our planning the trip by getting quotes from several companies, but Ahmed was able to provide the best value for our group.
We started our trip in Cairo and we're met at the airport where our visas were already in his hands and he was able to walk us through one of the long lines out to our driver who took us to the Cairo Marriott (last year we stayed at Marriott Mena House with Pyramid views).
Saturday morning our driver Kareem and guide Yousseff took us to Giza Pyramid Complex, lunch and then the Eygpt Museum.
Sunday we toured Islamic and Coptic Cairo, then lunch and shopping at KhanKhalily bazaars.
Monday morning we flew to Luxor and we're met by our guide Mohammed Hasan. We toured Karnak Temple and then boarded our ship the MS Esmeralda to check in and have lunch. That evening we toured Luxor temple.
Over the next four nights we were impressed by the knowledge that our guide, Mohammed Hasan gave us during the tours of the West bank of Luxor, Valley of the
Kings, Hatshepsut Temple & Colossi of Memnon, Abu Simbel, Philadelphia Temple and Eygpt overall.
All of our group was impressed with the quality of service, tour schedule and most of all our guides.
Mohammed Hasan as an Egyptologist has 21 years of experience. One of the group members was in his third trip to Eygpt and said Mohammed was far superior than the other guides he had.
From start to end everything was coordinated very well by Ahmed the owner of the agency. We really enjoyed the mobile hotspots he provided because it helped to stay connected.
Can't wait for our next trip with them.

We had a private 3-day tour around Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel.
The organization was perfect and so was the guide, Mahmoud, who made sure we were enjoying it and provided many tips on places to visit and eat.
Highly recommended!
