Saint Anthony's Monastery ( Deir Mar Antonios )
Saint Anthony's Monastery is an Orthodox Coptic monastery located in the Eastern Desert of Egypt, in the southern part of the Suez Governorate.
It was founded by the followers of Saint Anthony the Great, an early Christian monk. The monastery is one of the most prominent in Egypt and has had a strong influence in shaping many Coptic institutions, as well as fostering monasticism in general. Several patriarchs have emerged from the monastery, and it is visited daily by hundreds of pilgrims.
In 2002, the Egyptian government initiated an 8-year project worth $14.5 million to renovate the monastery. The modern monastery is a self-contained village with gardens, a mill, a bakery, and five churches. Today, it has become a popular destination for Egyptians, offering spiritual retreats for Egyptian Christians as well as family outings.
